30 April and 01 May 2009 FLW Stren Series Santee Cooper SC

I had waited a long time to fish this famous lakes system, but was quite amazed as to the actual depth and way that this lake was fished, nothing to what we are used to in South Africa. Firstly the majority of the lake is not much deeper than 6 ft, there are stumps all over the show, so there are specially marked ways that you can run your boat along, so you cannot just hop from one spot to the other by gunning it, you have to follow special waterways. The first day we must have travelled in excess of 90 miles on very rough water.

Unfortunately I was drawn with a Pro that was a good fisherman, but his strategy was to go sight fishing for 5 fish that he had located during his practise. So we were basically just looking for those fish on the beds, which left little opportunity for me to catch a fish, to be honest I only had one bite the whole day. What a disappointment.

Hopefully day 2 would get better.

P4300033 The release boat which takes out all the weighed fish after the tournament. I think the face tells it all. Even with fish finders and GPS as big as TV's on the front and back, the Pro could not put us onto fish. He would have done better putting on a DVD for me on the back

Day two promised to be better, my Pro for the day had caught a 13lb bag the day before and assured me he had spots with good fish. This was the type of guy to fish with, he immediately gave me lures for the three patterns that we were going to fish. As I mentioned before we only fished water that was between 2 and 4 ft in grass. Horny toads did not produce but he used a Skinky shad (my new secret) and Senko’s. Unfortunately even his spots did not pan out as planned and we struggled to get fish. I finally got a good fish of 3.07lb which still put me into 85 spot. I unfortunately could not stick 3 more good fish due to them short striking the lure.

Feeling a bit better, at least I did not blank. P5010057 Day two I fished of an Triton Bass Classic Limited edition 21 footer. In all honesty we had rougher water, but the ride seemed more comfortable than the Ranger. It could be that the extra foot makes for a smoother ride .Waiting to weigh Doing my thing on the stage. Note the fishing colours!!!!This boat had nice wrappin and actually had lily pads all over, kind of let me think of Alan Kenney.

Well not the result I had expected, but we will put it out of mind and focus on the next one at Lake Berkley in Kentucky next week. At least the second day Pro, who incidentally is a fish Biologist gave me three packets of Lures that work excellent on Lake Berkley.
