Today the main aim was to drive to Chicago, meet up with Elme and give her something to take back to South Africa. On our way to Chicago we found a Bass Pro Shops in Illinois, because believe it or not today we would pass through 4 States ( Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan) on our way to Auburn Hills in Michigan which is the Headquarters of Eagle Ottawa, a leather company that I worked for for 5 years. Hopefully I am going to meet up with some acquaintances there on my visit. Well I broke the law in Illinois, by skipping a Stop sign, whilst looking a the scenery, luckily there were no other cars.I also stopped twice at the next stop sign.
After this we ventured into Chicago to find the Quarters Club Hotel where Elme is staying in the hope to give her something. We drove into the city and my “Bitch” (GPS) all of a sudden got confused between the high rise buildings, but all credit to her she did get us to the Hotel. But as in the large cities, there was no parking and the traffic was hectic, so we decided to head on before we lost all satellite connection between the buildings. Unfortunately we could not meet up with Elme. I must say for such a big city it was very clean, had a relaxed atmosphere and people were friendly, unlike South Africa in Joburg.
After finding our way out the concrete jungle we entered Indiana, where we found a Cabela’s en route.
And then it was on the road again
We saw this beautiful information centre entering Indiana. I must say these information centres are invaluable, they have pamphlets and information galore on anything that is happening and worth mentioning in the State. And can I add, all the booklets, maps etc are free, unlike Africa. We also found BPS No2 for the day.
One thin about America is the roads, some of them really suck, the shocks bottom out and sometimes it sounds like you are a train with the rhythmic corrugated tar across the whole road.
Entering Michigan where we will be staying in Benton Harbour, along the St Josephs River. Here Michi tried to catch some fish, but no luck.
