24 March 2009 Next Stop Lake Ute in New Mexico

After our early morning wakeup call with raindrops pattering on the tent, we decided to pack up so that we would not sit with a wet tent and stuff in the car. This also meant that we could travel further than planned and also when we hit New Mexico we reached mountain time where we lost gained another hour. So we made a trip to Lake Ute. The weather looked fine, but the wind was still blowing, so we decided to camp again. This time I strategically placed the tent so that the wind would not hit it broad side, but I only realised too late that the wind would now blow through the tent. Temperatures plummeted towards freezing that night, but we all survived the cold in our Wal-mart sleeping bags that are good up to 3 deg C. The weather was cold, but the lake looked good and clear. This is apparently one of the best lakes for Walleyes and the Smallie record is 7lbs. So we tried our luck for an hour. Sven was the first Hüsgen to ever land a Smallie. His Smallie weighed about 500g and was a beautiful fish. We caught no further fish. He caught the fish on a Lavender shad DLN which he cast out with a bait caster which he only mastered a few minutes before.

A fat and healthy Small mouth Bass. And we were all inspired waiting for our own Smallies to bite,

but no such luck for us. P3250059 P3250058
